Before you move on

  • Build the Workbench, then craft flint weapons: flint is free along the shoreline and repairs without metal.
  • Hunt deer for hides, and keep two deer trophies for the Eikthyr offering.
  • Fire arrows are the earliest fire damage you can craft — a stack makes any early fight shorter.

One pick per weapon group, scored against the gate with its resistances applied. Per-hit damage is exact; time-to-kill uses each weapon's sourced timing cycle on primary attacks — see Assumptions.

Creature stats pulled from the Valheim wiki. Everything not listed is neutral (×1) — e.g. Blunt damage against Eikthyr. Starred (1★/2★) variants are not modelled: each card shows the base 0-star creature.

100

Damage scales with skill: 40% of listed damage at level 0, up to 92.5% on average at level 100.

Primary follows the weapon's real combo — 3 hits with a double-damage finisher for most, 2 for fists, 6 for the dual axes, and a single hit for spears, sledges, pickaxes and ranged weapons. Secondary applies the class's heavier attack, where it has one.

Bow and crossbow damage is listed weapon + listed ammo, added together per damage type.

Per-hit damage is exact wiki data. Cycle DPS is one full combo over its timing cycle, and time-to-kill uses a published hit schedule where one exists — otherwise it averages the cycle. Both depend on the attack timing sourced in Assumptions below.

Four swings, six hits: the third and fourth swings each land two hits, and the fourth swing's hits both deal double damage.

How the numbers are calculated
Weapon, boss and recipe data are scraped from the Valheim wiki into JSON committed with the app, so it needs no network at runtime. Attack timing is documented separately below with its sources and confidence.

The formula

Straight from the wiki's Damage mechanics page:

damage = listed damage
       × skill factor // 0.25–0.55 at skill 0, →1.0 by skill 75
       × backstab × stagger
       × attack bonus // combo weights, e.g. ×2 on a finisher
       × multitarget penalty // single target here = ×1
× damage type modifier // resistance tier

listed damage = weapon value + ammo value

Resistance tiers

very weak×2weak×1.5neutral×1resistant×0.5very resistant×0.25immune×0

Chop, Pickaxe and Pure are terrain damage (woodcutting, mining and structure damage) and are excluded — the wiki lists every creature except Barka as immune to chop, and all except a few Deep North creatures as immune to pickaxe. That is why a Stone Axe's chop damage never shows up as creature damage, and why the siege items are listed with little or no creature damage at all.

Attack timing: sourced, never guessed

Timings come from the wiki's attack-speed tables (retrieved 5 October 2026) and MaxDPS's game-derived model (Valheim 1.0.16 · build 25527674). Each attack says which one it uses; where the sources disagree, the alternative stays on record. Timing always means the repeat cycle — not a single swing.

Caveats, disagreements and unknowns

  • Unarmed (primary) — Two-hit chain: the second punch (left hand) deals double damage.
  • Unarmed (secondary) — The kick: 6× stagger and 80 knockback, but 1× damage on the wiki table.
  • Knife (primary) — Alternative: 1.69 s — MaxDPS — black-metal-knife.
  • Knife (secondary) — The lunging stab.
  • Sword (primary) — Alternative: 2.42 s — MaxDPS — iron-sword.
  • Sword (secondary) — The thrust.
  • One-handed Club (primary) — The wiki's stage breakdown (0.86 + 0.80 + 0.90) sums to 2.56 s, not the 2.46 s total, so the breakdown is not used. Alternative: 2.42 s — MaxDPS — club.
  • One-handed Club (secondary) — The overhead swing.
  • One-handed Axe (primary) — Alternative: 2.88 s — MaxDPS — flint-axe. 12% slower than the wiki total — a real disagreement, not rounding.
  • One-handed Axe (secondary) — The overhead swing.
  • Dual-wielded Axes (primary) — Four swings, six hits: the third and fourth swings each land two hits, and the fourth swing's hits both deal double damage. Alternative: 3.52 s — MaxDPS — berserkir-axes.
  • Dual-wielded Axes (secondary) — The jumping double slash.
  • Spear (primary) — A single thrust — spears have no 3-hit combo. Alternative: 0.66 s — MaxDPS — flint-spear.
  • Spear (secondary) — The throw; the 1.04 s includes picking the spear back up, so the cycle depends on retrieval distance.
  • Polearm (Atgeir) (primary) — Alternative: 2.96 s — MaxDPS — bronze-atgeir.
  • Polearm (Atgeir) (secondary) — The wide 360° spin; 1× damage, area effect not modelled.
  • Two-handed Sword (primary) — Alternative: 3.38 s — MaxDPS — krom.
  • Battleaxe (2H Axe) (primary) — Alternative: 3.72 s — MaxDPS — battleaxe. 16% slower than the wiki total — a real disagreement, not rounding.
  • Battleaxe (2H Axe) (secondary) — The shove.
  • Sledgehammer (2H Club) (primary) — A single slam with no 3-hit combo; the wiki notes it damages a 4 m area, which is not modelled. Alternative: 2.19 s — MaxDPS — iron-sledge. 29% slower than the wiki total — a real disagreement, not rounding.
  • Pickaxe (primary) — A single downward swing; only creature damage is counted. Alternative: 1.38 s — MaxDPS — black-metal-pickaxe.
  • Bow (primary) — Assumes a full draw — partial draws deal less damage and are not modelled. Repeat interval is the skill-scaled draw time, never faster than the wiki's 0.8 s minimum firing interval. Projectile travel is not modelled.
  • Crossbow (primary) — Reload 3.5 × (1 − skill / 200) s plus 1.15 s readying and 0.7 s firing/recovery. The model starts unloaded; a loaded first shot skips the reload, and TTK here averages the cycle. Alternative: 6.00 s — Valheim Wiki — Crossbows. The wiki says a crossbow can only be fired every 6 s once firing, loading and readying are counted — it does not publish the skill scaling.
  • Elemental Staff (primary) — No elemental staff publishes a repeat cycle: the Staff of Frost channels 0.2 s shard bursts, and Dundr has a 1.9 s reload, so no single number fits the class. 1.1 s is this app's estimate.
  • Blood Magic Staff (primary) — Blood magic damage comes from shields, summons and spirits; caster animation frequency is not a minion DPS model. 1.6 s is this app's estimate.
  • Bomb (primary) — No repeat interval published — throw time only. Impact and timed effects are not modelled.
  • Ballista Missile (primary) — Fired by a ballista, not by hand, and scaled by no weapon skill. The 2 s attack cooldown is used as the cycle; the listed 1 s warm-up is published separately and how the two combine into a real firing cadence is not verified.
  • Catapult Ammo (primary) — No verified firing or reset cycle; the timing belongs to the catapult launcher, not the ammunition. 6 s is this app's estimate.
All class timings and sources

Weapon-specific schedules

  • Iron Sword — 2.42 s · 3 hits (1+1+2×) · hits at 0.455 s, 1.096 s, 1.875 s (MaxDPS — iron-sword). Alternative: 2.46 s — Valheim Wiki — Swords. The wiki's animation-based total for the class.
  • Berserkir Axes — 3.52 s · 6 hits (1+1+1+1+2+2×) · hits at 0.211 s, 0.780 s, 1.425 s, 1.793 s, 2.463 s, 2.785 s (MaxDPS — berserkir-axes). Alternative: 3.62 s — Valheim Wiki — Axes. The wiki's animation-based total for the class.
  • Dundr — 1.90 s (Valheim Wiki — Dundr).

Per-hit damage does not use these values at all, so it stays exact even where the timing is a model or an estimate. Cycle DPS excludes stamina, eitr and interruptions; time-to-kill uses a published hit schedule where one exists and averages the cycle otherwise.

Sources

  • Data scraped from valheim.weirdgloop.org via the MediaWiki API on 5 October 2026. The older Fandom wiki is a version behind — it has no Deep North content — so it is no longer used.
  • Attack timing: the wiki's attack-speed tables (Axes, Swords, Clubs, Knives, Fists, Spears, Polearms, Pickaxes, Bows, Crossbows, Dundr), retrieved 5 October 2026; MaxDPS game-derived model (Valheim 1.0.16 · build 25527674); ballista structure values from valheim.gaming.tools.
  • 135 weapons · 19 ammo types · 8 bosses · 4 minibosses · 67 enemies · 9 biomes.
  • Availability is derived, not listed: an item appears once its crafting station and every material in its crafting recipe are reachable at the selected biome, resolved through the same recipe data for materials that are themselves weapons. Upgrade levels are gated separately, and a material missing from the curated table fails the scrape instead of being guessed at.
  • Creatures: the eight Forsaken, Hildir's four minibosses and every aggressive creature are scraped with the wiki's base (0-star) health and resistances; 1★/2★ variants are not modelled. Aggressive creatures are grouped by the biome the wiki lists them under, and miniboss biomes come from the dungeon each one occupies.
  • Excluded on purpose: shields (no damage), summon and support staves whose damage comes from minions, dev/cheat items, and gear whose recipe is disabled in the current build.
  • Not modelled: armour (creatures have none), blocking, parrying, stagger, backstab, multi-target penalties, and multi-projectile or area effects (Dundr's 12-bolt grapeshot and explosion damage). All of those multiply the numbers shown here rather than changing the ranking.
